Shami has a sister and three brothers,all of whom wanted to be three fast bowlers. in 2005, when the U-19 team of Uttar pradesh was not included, Shami's coach Badruddin sent him to Kolkata where Shami was the first Dalhousie athletic club to play again for the town club. After joining Bengal Under-22 team, Das sent Shami to Mohan Bagan club. One of the top clubs in Bengal.
